For many who joined our recent run of Reminiscence Connect, the experience was more than just a programme—it became a safe, meaningful space to reconnect with themselves and with others.
Susan, initially hesitant, was surprised by the joy she found. “I’m not very social, but I felt happier after each session. I even made new friends like Aganus.” In a heartfelt gesture, Susan sewed tote bags as gifts for the group—sharing not only her story, but also her skills and kindness.
For Aganus, RC became something to look forward to each week. Aganus shared: “The session on ambition touched me. We talked about our childhood dreams. It was meaningful hearing everyone’s stories. I wanted to be a model but became a child care teacher. It felt like a kampong; so warm and familiar.” It was meaningful hearing everyone’s stories.”
Lawrence joined the programme with his wife, who has cognitive impairment. “It’s not just for the individuals with dementia or memory issues—caregivers like me also found connection and comfort. It’s a well-run, casual programme that makes people feel open and safe. I saw how the sessions lifted her mood. I’ve even used some memory prompts at home, it helps.”
Jess, who joined the programme as a volunteer, reflected on its deeper impact:
“The real impact is in the social bonds. People who were strangers started exchanging contacts, sharing stories, laughing. It’s powerful,” and so beautiful how one person’s memory could spark another’s.”
Our next run of Reminiscence Connect will run from 8 July to 26 August 2025 (8 sessions). It takes place every Tuesday from 2pm – 3:30pm at Filos @ Blk 55 Chai Chee Drive. The programme is free for East-side residents.
Reminiscence Connect is an evidence-researched programme, opened to individuals at risk of cognitive decline (such as from stroke or other cognitive conditions), individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), or those living with mild to moderate dementia, as well as healthy seniors with no cognitive concerns. The programme also welcomes caregivers of anyone in these groups, offering a supportive space for shared connection and engagement.
