Every child deserves the chance to dream, grow, and thrive, regardless of the circumstances they are born into.
Yet for many children and families in our community, financial challenges and limited access to support can make that journey harder. Educational disparities remain a reality in Singapore. Recent data showed that the bottom 10% of households had an average monthly market income of about $1,196, making it difficult for some families to afford additional academic support and enrichment opportunities for their children.
At Filos Community Services, we believe children need more than academic support alone. They need a safe and encouraging community where they feel supported, build confidence, and discover opportunities to grow. We aim to raise $75,000 to support our Children and Youth Services, which provide essential literacy, tuition, and enrichment programmes.
One of these youths is Zaid.
Zaid first joined Filos through our Tuition and Green Spot programmes, where he received educational support and opportunities to connect with peers in a positive environment. Over time, Filos became more than just a place for programmes; it became a community that believed in him.
As Zaid grew older, he developed a passion for football and dreamed of forming a football team with his friends and joining a league together. With Filos Community Services’ support, the team strengthened its identity and was able to train regularly. More importantly, the boys gained encouragement from a community that believed in them and their aspirations.
Today, Zaid gives back to the same community that once supported him. From conducting football workshops for younger children to supporting community events and activities, he now encourages and inspires others in the same way he was once encouraged himself. Reflecting on his journey, Zaid shared: “Through football, my friends and I became like family. Filos believed in us and supported us with what we needed, and that gave us the opportunity to grow together and keep improving.”
