“I used to wake up scratching all over; I couldn’t breathe properly or sleep because the bed bugs were everywhere,” shares Mr Chiang, a 70-year-old senior who was struggling with poor living conditions and mounting health issues.
Living alone in a rental flat, Mr Chiang once prided himself on his independence. But over time, health problems and financial strain began to take their toll. Things worsened when a severe bed bug infestation took over his home, leaving him exhausted, anxious, and unable to rest properly.
With the support of Filos Community Services, Mr Chiang was referred for home refurbishment, received financial assistance to fumigate his flat, and was given new furniture to replace what had been damaged.
“Thank you Filos, for the new furniture and for eliminating the bed bugs; my sleep and skin are better,” he says with a smile.
Today, he enjoys a cleaner, safer home and feels more hopeful about the future, determined to keep his living space healthy and welcoming.
Another individual, Mr Koo, 83, faced a different kind of hardship. Once an active Taekwondo coach, he lost his leg in an accident and now lives alone with limited means. Managing daily essentials became a constant worry. With Filos’ monthly rations and support, he feels more stable and less anxious about his day-to-day needs.
For many low-income individuals and families like Mr Chiang and Mr Koo, rising costs, health challenges, and unexpected crises can easily turn daily living into a struggle for survival. But through compassion and community, we can help turn hardship into hope.
